A Letter of Thanksgiving
I remember when November used to be a month engulfed in harvest decorations with images of pilgrims. We anticipated great food, relaxation, and family gatherings. These days, Christmas decorations seem to go up earlier and earlier, but in a year with so much change and upheaval, the need to give thanks becomes even more important. My family is spending Thanksgiving far apart, just like many of you. So let me invite you to my table, (virtually!), and I’ll share with you what I would have shared with those close to me as we went around speaking of gratefulness.
I’m thankful for…
– The Heritage of Thanksgiving –
I remember my mother-in-law cooking Thanksgiving dinner for over 36 people decades ago. Grandchildren running in and out of the kitchen, and it didn’t phase her one bit. Dinner was fantastic, the day was relaxing, and we were full in every way. I look forward to returning to those types of celebrations, surrounded by loved ones.
– The Love of Family –
To my precious mother who tells me to get enough rest each time we talk twice a day. To my husband who brings me fresh coffee every morning. To our children who are all grown adults with children of their own and the love we share for each other.
– The Kindness of a Stranger –
The owner of a restaurant running through a parking lot to return my purse that I left on a chair. The desk clerk at the hotel in Oklahoma City, that greeted me by name every time I passed by. And the Uber driver who shared her incredible life story.
What a gift these things are! There is so much kindness in this world. May we focus on it and give thanks, passing it on at every turn.
This season of Thanksgiving, as the leaves finish falling around you and the stillness of winter begins to set in, take a moment to turn your heart toward thankfulness; and out of that gratitude, usher in the season of joy and giving.
